I've recently become very interested in poetry as an expression of consciousness and this is my attempt at spoken word poetry on my awareness of contentment. I'm sure that the things that bring you contentment will possibly be different to mine -- not everyone can feel that strangely comforting sensation from camping in a tent! But maybe like me, you have been able to see that contentment, which brings great peace, freedom and a deep happiness, is available the moment you chose to recognise it. And this is what this poem is about; it's about understanding that contentment is always present and accessible as soon as you decide to change your state of mind which can clearly alter your perspective and appreciation of life too. Maybe obvious, but I feel it brings with it an awareness of fullness and completeness, as opposed to the neediness and emptiness of discontent.
Contentment is a choice we can make. It can be a simple choice to make, but is difficult as it often means choosing a simpler life over our pursuit of pleasure. The first noble truth of Buddhism tells us that life is characterised by pain, suffering and dissatisfaction. The second noble truth tells us that the origin of suffering is our craving for pleasure, but the third noble truth states that there is a way to rid ourselves of suffering, and I personally feel that this is where our choice to live a life with "raison d'être without the etc" helps us to see that through our choice to accept contentment over pleasure, we open our capacity for greater joy and deeper happiness in our lives with more meaning.
Anyway, I hope it's received in the spirit of its intention and brings you closer to the realisation of contentment or possibly a deeper belief in your own perception of where contentment sits with you.
